Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker poster

The surviving members of the resistance face the First Order once again, and the legendary conflict between the Jedi and the Sith reaches its peak bringing the Skywalker saga to its end.

Rey is Emperor Palpatine’s granddaughter. She kills Palpatine (once and for all?), but dies from the effort. Ben Solo uses the last of his power to resurrect Rey. The two kiss and Ben dies. Rey buries Luke and Leia’s lightsabers on Tattoine, and calls herself Rey Skywalker.

The opening fanfare reveals that Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) has been sending transmissions throughout the galaxy. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) tracks him down and finds that he never died at the end of Return of the Jedi, but has been using the dark powers of the Force to keep himself alive. Palpatine tasks him with bringing him Rey (Daisy Ridley).

Rey trains under Leia (Carrie Fisher) while Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), and Chewbacca (retrieve information from a mole within the First Order detailing Ren’s plans. Rey, C-3PO, and BB-8 join the crew to meet Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) on another planet. He leads them to an artifact that can help them locate the emperor. It is a dagger inscribed with Sith text. C-3PO can interpret the text, but cannot verbally translate it.

Kylo Ren confronts Rey and the two briefly fight, concluding with Rey emitting Force lightning from her hand.

On another planet, C-3PO is able to translate the text at the expense of his memory, which is backed up in R2D2. The text shows that a way-finder to Palpatine is located on another moon of Endor. Rey, Poe, and Finn infiltrate a star destroyer to save Chewbacca, but the latter two are captured and ordered to be executed. Rey fights Kylo Ren through their Force bond, and it is revealed that she is Emperor Palpatine’s granddaughter.

General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) reveals himself to be the mole, hoping to overthrow Kylo Ren after the murder of Snoke. Hux releases the prisoners but is discovered and killed by his superior.

On the Endor moon, Rey finds the Wayfinder in the wreckage of the second Death Star. Upon touching it, she envisions herself as a sith lord. Kylo Ren destroys the wayfinder and fights Rey again. This time, Leia reaches out to Kylo Ren through the Force, allowing Rey to mortally wound him as Leia dies. Rey uses the Force to heal Kylo Ren’s wound before leaving on Kylo Ren’s ship to return to Acht-to. Kylo Ren imagines a conversation with Han Solo, after which he discards his Sith lightsaber and renounces his title, reverting back to Ben Solo.

On Acht-To, Rey speaks with the Force ghost of Luke (Mark Hamill), who tells her that she must confront the Emperor, and gives her a lightsaber that once belonged to Leia. Using the wayfinder from Kylo Ren’s ship, Rey heads to the Emperor’s planet while transmitting the coordinates to the Resistance.

Rey and Ben confront the Emperor while the limited Resistance ships engage a fleet of Star destroyers. As the emperor absorbs lifeforce energy from Rey and Ben, hundreds of ships appear to aid the Resistance. Although exhausted, Rey hears the voices of all the deceased Jedi (including Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker, and Mace Windu) and becomes rejuvenated. She uses both Luke and Leia’s lightsabers to reflect the Emperor’s Force lightning back at him, killing him (we are to believe) once and for all. But the power is too much for her, and Rey dies. Ben uses the last of his Force powers fo resurrect Rey. The two embrace and kiss before Ben and his mother simultaneously join the Force.

Above, all star-destroyers are destroyed and the First Order is no more.

Rey returns to Tattoine and buries the twin lightsabers. We are shown a brief glimpse of Rey’s own yellow lightsaber before she introduces herself to a passerby as “Rey Skywalker.”

Following a threat of revenge by the revived Emperor Palpatine, Kylo Ren obtains a Sith wayfinder, leading him to the uncharted planet Exegol. There, he finds Palpatine, who reveals that he created Snoke as a puppet to control the First Order and lure Kylo to the dark side. Palpatine unveils a secret armada of Star Destroyers and tells Kylo to find and kill Rey, who is continuing her Jedi training under Resistance leader Leia Organa. Finn and Poe Dameron deliver intel from a spy that Palpatine is on Exegol; Rey has learned from Luke Skywalker’s notes that a Sith wayfinder can lead them there. Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, BB-8, and C-3PO depart in the Millennium Falcon to Pasaana, where Luke’s search for Exegol ended.

On Pasaana, the group encounters Lando Calrissian, who points them to the wayfinder’s last suspected location. Kylo learns where Rey is through their Force bond and travels there with his warrior subordinates, the Knights of Ren. Rey and the others discover the remains of a Jedi hunter named Ochi, his ship, and a dagger inscribed with Sith text, which C-3PO’s programming forbids him from interpreting. Sensing that Kylo is nearby, Rey goes to confront him. The First Order captures the Falcon, Chewbacca, and the dagger; attempting to save Chewbacca, Rey accidentally destroys a First Order transport with Force lightning. Presuming that Chewbacca has been killed, the group escapes on Ochi’s ship.

Poe suggests traveling to Kijimi to have the Sith text extracted from C-3PO’s memory; the process reveals coordinates to a wayfinder. Rey senses that Chewbacca is alive, and the group mounts a rescue mission. While Kylo searches for Rey, the group infiltrates his Star Destroyer with the help of Zorii Bliss, an acquaintance of Poe’s. Rey recovers the dagger and has visions of her parents being killed with it. Kylo informs her that she is Palpatine’s granddaughter; the Sith Lord had ordered Ochi to recover Rey as a child, but her parents hid her on Jakku to protect her. General Hux saves Poe, Finn, and Chewbacca from execution, revealing himself as the spy. He permits the group to escape on the Falcon, but is discovered and executed.

The group arrives on Kef Bir, where Rey locates the wayfinder on the remains of the second Death Star; upon touching the artifact, she has a vision of herself as a Sith. Having tracked them, Kylo destroys Rey’s wayfinder and duels her. Dying, Leia calls to Kylo through the Force, distracting him as Rey impales him. Sensing Leia’s death, Rey heals Kylo and takes his ship to exile herself on Ahch-To. There, Luke’s Force spirit encourages Rey to face Palpatine and gives her Leia’s lightsaber. Rey leaves for Exegol in Luke’s X-wing fighter, using the wayfinder from Kylo’s ship. Meanwhile, Kylo converses with a memory of his father, Han Solo; he throws away his lightsaber and reclaims his identity as Ben Solo. Palpatine has one of his superlaser-equipped Star Destroyers obliterate Kijimi.

Upon the group’s return to the Resistance base, R2-D2 receives a signal from Rey. The Resistance follows Rey’s coordinates to Exegol, where she confronts Palpatine; he demands she kill him to transfer his spirit into her. Lando brings reinforcements from across the galaxy to join the battle. Ben overpowers the Knights of Ren and joins Rey, but Palpatine drains the pair’s power to rejuvenate himself. He attacks the Resistance fleet with Force lightning and incapacitates Ben. Weakened, Rey hears the voices of past Jedi, who lend her their strength. Palpatine attacks her with his lightning, but Rey deflects it using the Skywalker lightsabers, killing him and herself. Ben revives Rey by transferring his life force into her; Rey kisses Ben before he dies. The Resistance destroys the remainder of Palpatine’s armada, and people across the galaxy rise up against the First Order.

As the Resistance celebrates, Rey visits Luke’s abandoned childhood home on Tatooine and buries the Skywalker lightsabers, having built her own. A passerby asks her name; as the spirits of Luke and Leia watch, she replies, “Rey Skywalker.”
